Sokrates on Iakkhos, the Underworld, Dionysos and Reincarnation

Sokrates : But now, since the soul is seen to be immortal, it cannot escape from evil or be saved in any other way than by becoming as good and wise as possible. For the soul takes with it to the other world nothing but its education and nurture, and these are said to benefit or injure the departed greatly from the very beginning of his journey thither. And so it is said that after death, the tutelary daimon of each person, to whom he had been allotted in life, leads him to a place where the dead are gathered together (i.e. the daimon guide is Plato's equivalent of Hermes, guide of the dead); then they are judged and depart to the other world with the guide whose task it is to conduct thither those who come from this world, probably Iakkhos; and when they have there received their due and remained through the time appointed, another guide, probably Dionysos, brings them back after many long periods of time (i.e. they are reincarnated).

The Eleusinian Iakkhos

[The god Dionysos encounters a chorus of Eleusinian initiates in the Underworld on their way to Elysium.]

Chorus [of the shades of Eleusinian initiates in the distance] : O lakkhos! O lakkhos! O Iakkhos!

Xanthias : I have it, master, 'tis those blessed mystics, the souls of those who were initiated into the Mysteries in life, of whom he told us, sporting hereabouts. They sing the Iakkhos which Diagoras made . . .

Chorus : O Iakkhos! power excelling, here in stately temples dwelling. O Iakkhos! O lakkhos! Manifesto for Occult Traditions - Call for Papers

Within a mundane and simple arena of understanding and experience, the word ‘occult’, which derives from the Latin word ‘occultus’, refers to anything aspiring to knowledge of the hidden, secret and clandestine. However, if one is to dwell deeper into the arcane dialectics of the holy matrimony of the macrocosm and microcosm it becomes apparent, and not always in a logical and pleasant fashion, that more is to be whispered, unveiled and conjured in regards to the occult.

It is therefore my pleasure and honour to invite you to partake in this mystery of occult manifestation of the pure but temporarily obscured pure forces of the cosmos.

Since the dawn of ages men and women have sought a glimpse of occult gnosis within the awesome natural performance of ritual, the slithering flow of the elements, the sensational sounds of the spheres, the iconic form of dreams undreamt and now awoken, the irrational whispering of mystical verse, the silence of contemplation and the passion drenched erotic thirst for life, death and rebirth. Unlike the priesthood of convention and dogmatism, these men and women, the Magos, have been a visible representation of spiritual virility, the human condition and many times the romantic antinomian ethos refusing the dictates of conventional society, morality and metaphysical culture whilst aligning themselves purely with the laws of the pure forces of the cosmos. They employed a multitude of arcane symbols reflecting other dimensions of spiritual rapture; they howled barbarous names of holy and unholy power in the wilderness; they communed with gods and goddesses deep within their own earthly abodes; they conjured angels and demons within and outside geometrical patterns of spiritual authority; they glimpsed into the present reflecting itself through the future and echoing from the past; they have been hunted, praised, deified and condemned to the abyss... yet they are still amongst us, brothers and sisters,  essentially attempting to adapt the Occult to a disenchanted world, a world which no longer harbours a dimension of irreducible mystery based upon an experience of the sacred as present in the daily world, a world that is decadent, materialistic,  mortally egocentric, delusional, imbalanced and suffocated.

Before I present the desired intention of Occult Traditions I believe it is necessary to define what I mean by Tradition by presenting what I conceive as being the most coherent and all-embracing definition written by Julius Evola,

According to its true, living meaning, Tradition is neither servile conformity to what has been, nor a sluggish perpetuation of the past into the present. Tradition, in its essence, is something simultaneously meta-historical and dynamic: it is an overall ordering force, in service of principles that have the chrism of a superior legitimacy.

Within this framework the desired intention of Occult Traditions is to seek out individuals willing to unveil eternal and dynamic occult gems of the magical universe as presented and experienced throughout a vast matrix of occult principles, paths, disciplines and traditions.

Qualitative contributions on all aspects of the occult is an encouraged desire, whether that be a historical, philosophical or practical exploration and presentation. In addition, more irrational literary and visual endeavours are also highly encouraged as precious representations of occult gnosis in the here and now yet reflecting Aion of aions.
If your body, heart and soul desires so and yearns passionately to unveil gems of occult gnosis it would be my pleasure to discuss the ambitions of your epiphany. It would be an even greater pleasure if this discussion could manifest in the flesh but unfortunately we are still overwhelmed by the vastness of the cosmos so therefore for those still far away whisper to me your conceptualised ideas relating to the paper you would like to submit at
The deadline for the final submission will take place on the 21st of December 2010, however this might be able be extended by a lunar cycle. It would be my pleasure to become aware of your initial concept, title and drafts and soon as possible.

The Rite of the Blasting of the Veil

Facing the east sacrifice frankincense and recite the following prayer,

Greetings, O lord, you who are the way to receive favour for the universe and for the world in which we dwell.

Heaven has become a place of dancing for you, ΑΡΣΕΝΟΦΡΗ; O king of the heavenly gods,  ΑΒΛΑΝΑΘΑΝΑΛΒΑ; you who possesses righteousness, ΑΚΡΑΜΜΑΧΑΜΑΡΕΙ; gracious god, ΣΑΝΚΑΝΑΘΑΡΑ; ruler of nature, ΣΑΤΡΑΠΕΡΚΜΗΦ; origin of the heavenly realm,  ΑΘΘΑΝΝΟΥ ΑΘΘΑΝΝΟΥ ΑΣΤΡΑΦΑΙ ΙΑΣΤΡΑΦΑΙ ΠΑΚΕΡΤΩΘ ΣΑΒΑΩΘ ΗΡΙΝΤΑΣΚΛΙΟΥΘ ΗΦΙΩ ΜΑΡΜΑΡΑΩ.

Face the east. Stretch out your right hand to your left and your left hand, likewise to the left and chant ΑΑΑΑΑΑΑ. See a portal opening to the east stretching out to infinity.

Face the north. Put forward only your right fist and chant ΕΕΕΕΕΕΕ. See a portal opening to the north stretching out to infinity.

Face the west. Extend both hands in front of you chant ΗΗΗΗΗΗΗ. See a portal opening to the west stretching out to infinity.

Face the south. Hold both hands on your stomach and chant ΙΙΙΙΙΙΙ. See a portal opening to the south stretching out to infinity.

Face the east or stand at the bomos facing the east. Bend over touching the ends of your toes and chant ΟΟΟΟΟΟΟ. See a portal opening to the depths of the earth. Feel grounded and stable.

Place both your hands on your heart and gaze into the air and chant ΥΥΥΥΥΥΥ. See a portal opening in the air.

Place both hands on your head, look up to the heavens and chant ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ. See a portal opening to the cosmos, stretching out to infinity and connecting you with the depths of the universe. 


I call upon you, who are greater than all, the creator of all, you, the self-begotten, who see all and are not seen; for you gave Helios the glory and all the power, Selene the privilege to wax and wane and have fixed courses, yet you took nothing from the earlier-born darkness, but apportioned things so that they would be equal; for when you appeared, both order arose and light appeared. All things are subject to you, whose true form none of the gods can see; who can change into all forms. You are invisible, Aion of aions!

I call upon you, eternal and unbegotten, who are one, who alone hold together the whole creation of all things, whom none understands, whom the gods worship, whose name not even the gods can utter. Inspire from your exhalation, ruler of the pole, him who is under you...[1].

Create a vortex of energeia, quickly. I call on your name, the greatest among gods. Open, open, four quarters of the cosmos, for the lord of the inhabited world comes forth. Archangels, decans, angels rejoice, for Aion of aions himself, the only transcendent, invisible, goes through this place. By the name ΑΙΑ ΑΙΝΡΥΧΑΘ, cast up, earth, for the lord, all things you contain, for he is the storm-sender and controller of the abyss, master of fire.

Visit each portal and recite, Open, for ΑΧΕΒΥΚΡΩΜ commands you!

Having drawn in spirit with all your senses[2] face the east and recite, O gods who in the east. With one breath chant[3] ΩΑΩΗΩΩΕΟΗΙΑΩ.

Face the south and recite, O gods who are in the south. Chant ΙΙΙ.

Face the north and recite, O gods who are in the north. Chant ΑΑΩ.

Turn counter-clockwise until you face the west and recite, O gods who are in the west.ΘΗ. Chant

Turn counter-clockwise to the south and kneel on your right knee. Stand, and keep rotating counter-clockwise until the east is again faced or you are standing at the bomos facing the east.

Look down at the earth and recite, O gods who are in the earth. Chant ΘΟΥ.

Look up into the air and see the moon. Recite, O gods who are in the sub-lunar realms.ΘΗ. Chant

Look up into the air and see the water. Recite, O gods who are in the primeval waters. Chant ΑΑΘΩ.

Look up to the heavens and see the cosmos. Recite, O gods who are in the heavens. Chant ΑΘΗΡΟΥΟ.


[1] You are to state the nature of the ritual space intended.
[2] The energy must be felt as tangible – it should be seen, heard, felt, smelt and tasted.
[3] Whilst chanting all portals should be visualised as closing.
