Thus Spoke Selene

And next, sweet voiced Mouses, daughters of Zeus, well- skilled in song, have told of me the long-winged moon. From my immortal head a radiance is shown from heaven and embraces earth; and great is the beauty that arises from my shining light. The air, unlit before, glows with the light of my silver crown, and my rays beam clear, whensoever I, bright Selene, having bathed my lovely body in the waters of Okeanos, and donned my far-gleaming, shining team, drive on my long-maned horses at full speed, at eventime in the mid-month; then my great orbit is full and then my beams shine brightest as I increase. So I am a sure token and a sign to mortals.

The Calling of Iakkhos

Sacrifice the aroma of styrax and recite,

O IAKKHOS, whom the light amidst the darkness adorns, hear my ritual cry. IAKKHOS, O IAKKHOS! O IAKKHOS, much-loved resident of these quarters, IAKKHOS, O IAKKHOS, come to this field for the dance with your holy followers, setting in motion the crown which sits on your head, thick with myrtle-berries, boldly stamping the beat with your foot in the unrestrained fun-loving celebration, the dance overflowing with grace, dance sacred to the holy initiates! O IAKKHOS, wake the fiery torches which you brandish in your hands, IAKKHOS, O IAKKHOS, brilliant star of the all-night celebration! The meadow is aflame with light; old men's knees cavort! They shake off the pain of long years in old age in their holy excitement. Hold your light aloft and lead the youthful chorus, Lord, to the lush flowers of the sacred ground! O IAKKHOS, whom the light amidst the darkness adorns, hear my ritual cry!  IAKKHOS, O IAKKHOS!

A Charm for Vision from the Gods

You are to take a copper vessel, pour rainwater into it and sacrifice frankincense.

Recite, Let the earth be still, let the air be still, let the sea be still, let the winds also be still and do not be a hindrance to this my divination. No sound, no loud cry, no hissing. For I am a prophet, and since I am about to call a terrible fearful name, ΚΟΛΛΑ ΟΛΦΙΛΟΓΕΜΑΛΑ ΑΧΕΡΩΙΟ, open the holy temple, the world built on the earth, and welcome Osiris, because  I am ΜΑΝΧΝΩΒΙΣ ΧΟΛΧΟΒΗ ΜΑΛΑΣΗΤ ΙΑΤ ΘΑΝΝΟΥΙΤΑ ΚΕΡΤΩΜΕΝΟΥ ΠΑΚΕΡΒΑΩ ΚΡΑΜΜΑΣΙΡΑΤ ΜΟΜΟΜΟ ΜΕΛΑΣΟΥΤ ΠΕΥ ΦΡΗ. Open my ears so that you may reveal to me concerning those things I ask you to answer me. Come on, come on; immediately, immediately; quickly, quickly,; and speak concerning those things about which I questioned you. Appear to me, lord Anubis, I command you, for I am ΙΕΩ ΒΕΛΦΕΝΩ, who considers this matter.

After the gods have revealed to you that which you seek in vision recite, Go away, Anubis, to your own thrones, for my health and well-being.

Orphic Hymn to Hermes

Hermes, draw near, and to my prayer incline,
Angel of Zeus, and Maia's son divine;
Studious of contests, ruler of mankind,
With heart almighty, and a prudent mind.
Celestial messenger, of various skill,
Whose powerful arts could watchful Argos kill:
With winged feet, it is yours through air to course,
O friend of man, and prophet of discourse:
Great life-supporter, to rejoice is thine,
In arts gymnastic, and in fraud divine:
With power endued all language to explain,
Of care the loosener, and the source of gain.
Whose hand contains of blameless peace the rod,
Corucian, blessed, profitable god;
Of various speech, whose aid in works we find,
And in necessities to mortals kind:
Dire weapon of the tongue, which men revere,
Be present, Hermes, and your suppliant hear;
Assist my works, conclude my life with peace,
Give graceful speech, and me memory's increase.

Concerning the Ritual Dance of the Greek Magical Papyri

It is evident from studying the mystic rituals of the Greek Magical Papyri that the magos of pure energeia did not work with the 4 cardinal points but instead blasted the veil from the 7 directions of the cosmos by ritually employing the 7 Greek vowels through chant and vision.

Face the east. Stretch out your right hand to your left and your left hand, likewise to the left and chant ΑΑΑΑΑΑΑ. Face the north. Put forward only your right fist and chant ΕΕΕΕΕΕΕ. Face the west. Extend both hands in front of you chant ΗΗΗΗΗΗΗ. Face the south. Hold both hands on your stomach and chant ΙΙΙΙΙΙΙ. Face the east or stand at the bomos facing the east. Bend over touching the ends of your toes and chant ΟΟΟΟΟΟΟ. Place both your hands on your heart and gaze into the air and chant ΥΥΥΥΥΥΥ. Place both hands on your head, look up to the heavens and chant ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ.

Apart from this ritual gesture and another that involves moving clockwise, all rites require the magos to rotate and counter-rotate through 270˚, beginning in the east and ending by facing the east. The ritual  commonality lies in facing each of the cardinal points while maintaining rotational balance. The magos of the Papyri does not work with circles but seeks emphasis to reach all 7 directions while maintaining rotational balance.

O Isis, O Nephthys, O noble soul of Osiris Wennefer, come to me! I am your beloved son, Horus, O gods who are in heaven, O gods who are in the earth, Ogods who are in the primeval waters, O gods who are in the south, O gods who are in the north, O gods who are in the west, O gods who are in the east, come to me tonight!

Orphic Hymn to Selene

Hear, goddess queen, diffusing silver light,
Bull-horned and wandering through the gloom of night.
With stars surrounded, and with circuit wide
Night's torch extending, through the heavens you ride:
Female and male with borrowed rays you shine,
And now full-orbed, now tending to decline.
Mother of ages, fruit-producing moon,
Whose amber orb makes night's reflected noon:
Lover of horses, splendid, queen of night,
All-seeing power bedecked with starry light.
Lover of vigilance, the foe of strife,
In peace rejoicing, and a prudent life:
Fair lamp of night, its ornament and friend,
Who gives to nature's works their destined end.
Queen of the stars, all-wife Artemis hail!
Decked with a graceful robe and shining veil;
Come, blessed goddess, prudent, starry, bright,
Come moony-lamp with chaste and splendid light,
Shine on these sacred rites with prosperous rays,
And please accept your suppliant's mystic praise.

Orphic Hymn to Helios

Hear golden titan, whose eternal eye
With broad survey, illumines all the sky.
Self-born, unwearied in diffusing light,
And to all eyes the mirror of delight:
Lord of the seasons, with your fiery car
And leaping coursers, beaming light from far:
With your right hand the source of morning light,
And with your left the father of the night.
Agile and vigorous, venerable sun,
Fiery and bright around the heavens you run.
Foe to the wicked, but the good man's guide,
Over all his steps propitious you preside:
With various founding, golden lyre, it is mine
To fill the world with harmony divine.
Father of ages, guide of prosperous deeds,
The world's commander, borne by lucid steeds,
Immortal Zeus, all-searching, bearing light,
Source of existence, pure and fiery bright
Bearer of fruit, almighty lord of years,
Agile and warm, whom every power reveres.
Great eye of nature and the starry skies,
Doomed with immortal flames to set and rise
Dispensing justice, lover of the stream,
The world's great despot, and over all supreme.
Faithful defender, and the eye of right,
Of steeds the ruler, and of life the light:
With founding whip four fiery steeds you guide,
When in the car of day you glorious ride.
Propitious on these mystic labours shine,
And bless your suppliants with a life divine.

Thus spoke the Magos Amenhotep

I am really magnificent among my people, one with a heaving heart when he is looking for a plan in some unknown problem, like one whose heart knows it already; who finds a sentence even if it was found destroyed; master of wisdom, friend of the ruler, who does useful things for the Horus, who makes his monuments splendid in order to cause everybody to remember him forever at the august place. Who guides the ignorant through the events since the primeval times, who shows their place to everybody who forgot about it; useful in his ideas, when he is looking for monuments to make immortal the name of his lord; who relates the proverb and acts with his fingers; leader of engaging manners as a pleasant one. Who venerates the name of the king and his power, who praises his Majesty at any time of the day, who is on his guard in all his decisions.

And the Mad Daimon spoke

The mad Daimon spoke to the young Magos, O Child of Earth and the Starry Heavens, mortal immortal, enchanter of enchantment, hear my words as I cry them out to you in the astral wilderness. Just like the mad god you shall wander in torment seeking your initiation into the mysteries of the cosmos and yourself, for As Above So Below! But your initiation shall only guide you towards the abyss, where either you shall descend and be bound to a rock for pestilent spirits to tear you to shreds for all eternity, or you might cross the abyss and ascend becoming a god amongst men and women.  Yea, verily Magos, O man and god amongst mortals and immortals! Now, what is it you desire, young Magos?

And the young Magos replied, I desire that which is my mortal and divine right, for I am below and I reflect that which is above! To seek and achieve initiation! To conquer the abyss! To become man and god amongst mortals and immortals! Yea, verily mad Daimon, align me to that which I desire!

Then listen to me, the mad Daimon whispered in response, a hissing euphony soaring throughout the cosmos as a serpentine spiral.  Genesis shall become your breath, the pneuma of Α and Ω. But you shall give birth to life and death, serenity and destruction, beauty and abominations. The Heavens shall be your crown and the Watery Abyss below your foundation, and the gods will look upon with favour and then curse you for yearning to become one amongst them. The Angel, that powerful aerial spirit shall succumb to all your demands and even take you with him upon death into the air, but he shall not discriminate between those you love and those you hate. The energeia of the Cosmos shall soar through you but with it comes madness, an insatiable desire to become one with what you might not understand until you have howled in pain those barbarous words of unveiling. Then you shall become a man and god amongst mortals and immortals. Women will love your eros, desire your light and darkness. But, young Magos, you shall be destruction. They will adore you, they will praise your words and follow you into the twilight, only to betray you to judges and priests for they fear what they do not comprehend. Beware, young Magos, for the path you seek is a lonely one, a perilous one, a god-like one...

And years later, the old Magos stared at his son with gnosis and madness in his eyes. Now listen to me, my son. I have danced upon soaring mountains naked with the gods, I have confronted the infernal spirits of the abyss, I have survived the insane whispering of the legions that awaken at dusk, I have stared into the Sun and I have made love to the Moon drunk on Mendesian wine... yet fear that which might and will unveil, for the initiation has yet to manifest...

The Spell of the Mithraic Liturgy

First origin of my origin, ΑΕΗΙΟΥΩ, first beginning of my beginning, ΠΠΠ ΣΣΣ[1] ΦΡΕ, spirit of spirit, the first of the spirit in me, ΜΜΜ, fire given by god to my mixture of the mixtures in me, the first of the fire in me, ΗΥ ΗΙΑ ΕΗ, water of water, the first of the water in me, ΩΩΩ ΑΑΑ ΕΕΕ, earthy material, the first of the earthy material in me, ΥΗ ΥΩΗ, my complete body, I[2], whose mother is[3], which was formed by a noble arm and an incorruptible right hand in a world without light and yet radiant, without soul and yet alive with soul, ΥΗΙ ΑΥΙ ΕΥΩΙΕ: now if it be your will, ΜΕΤΕΡΤΑ ΦΩΘ ΙΕΡΕΖΑΘ, give me over to immortal birth and, following that, to my underlying nature, so that, after the present need which is pressing me exceedingly, I may gaze upon the immortal beginning with the immortal spirit, ΑΝΧΡΕΦΡΕΝΕΣΟΥΦΙΡΙΓΧ, with the immortal water, ΕΡΟΝΟΥΙ ΠΑΡΑΚΟΥΝΗΘ, with the most steadfast air, ΕΙΟΑΗ ΨΕΝΑΒΘΩ; that I may be born again in thought, ΚΡΑΟΧΡΑΞ Ρ ΟΙΜ ΕΝΑΡΧΟΜΑΙ, and the sacred spirit may breathe in me, ΝΕΧΘΕΝ ΑΡΟΤΟΥ ΝΕΧΘΙΝ ΑΡΠΙ ΗΘ; so that I may wonder at the sacred fire, ΚΥΦΕ; that I may gaze upon the unfathomable, awesome water of the dawn, ΝΥΩ ΘΕΣΩ ΕΧΟ ΟΥΧΙΕΧΩΑ,and the vivifying and encircling aither may hear me, ΑΡΝΟΜΗΘΦ; for today I am about to behold, with immortal eyes – I, born mortal from mortal womb, but transformed by tremendous power and an incorruptible right hand and with immortal spirit, the immortal Aion and master of the fiery diadems – I, sanctified through holy consecrations – while there subsists within me, holy, for a short time, my human soul-might, which I will again receive after the present bitter and relentless necessity which is pressing down on me – I[4], whose mother is[5], according to the immutable decree of god, ΕΥΗ ΥΙΑ ΕΗΙ ΑΩ ΕΙΑΥ ΙΥΑ ΙΕΩ. Since it is impossible for me, born mortal, to rise with the golden brightness of the immortal brilliance, ΩΗΥ ΑΕΩ ΗΥΑ ΕΩΗ ΥΑΕ ΩΙΑΕ, stand O perishable nature of mortals, and at once receive me safe and sound after the inexorable and pressing need. For I am the son ΨΥΧΩΝ ΔΕΜΟΥ ΠΡΟΧΩ  ΠΡΩΑ, I am ΜΑΧΑΡΦ Ν ΜΟΥ ΠΡΩΨΥΧΩΝ ΠΡΩΕ.

PGM IV. 490-535

[1] These are popping and hissing sounds.
[2] You are to state your name.
[3] You are to state your mother’s name.
[4] You are to state your name.
[5] You are to state your mother’s name.

Hear, hear before ascending to Lord Helios Mithras

Be gracious to me, O Providence and Psyche, as I write these mysteries handed down not for gain but for instruction; and for an only child I request immortality, O initiates of this our power. Furthermore, it is necessary for you, O daughter, to take the juices of herbs and spices, which will be made known to you at the end of my holy treatise, which the great god Helios Mithras ordered to be revealed to me by his archangel. So that I alone may ascend into heaven as an inquirer and behold the universe.  ΑΕΗΙΟΥΩΥΟΙΗΕΑ!
